The state board of elections "says" that this incorrect data came about when some counties used the default date of 1/1/1900 for those voters who were already registered, but at the time of registration were only required to provide their age. When the change was made to require birthdates mm/dd/yyyy, instead of contacting voters they defaulted to this very poor choice of a date.
The deeper, underlying problem is that the data the SBE has is incorrect and they do nothing to fix it. They have been aware (and approved of the incorrect data in the firstplace) and have refused any attempt to correct it as a result the data is worthless - what other problems can be found in NC's voter rolls? Dead people, felons, duplicate records - the list could go on and on. The least we should expect is a state board of elections striving for clean voter rolls - not the same old retort that we shouldn't expect perfection...

I strongly doubt they have 'refused any attempt to correct it', when it is much more likely that they simply haven't corrected it completely. My skepticism of your claim is doubled when you imply that the voter rolls are 'worthless' because of an error rate around 1/10th of 1%, which is asinine.
